Meaning

Meaning is not a psychological amenity. In the governance context, it is a functional resource — one that determines the time horizon from which decisions are made, the quality of presence available in high-stakes conversations, and the resilience of a steward's orientation across periods of significant uncertainty.

A steward who has lost contact with the meaning of what they are stewarding makes a specific and recognisable set of errors. They optimise for preservation when participation is called for. They substitute structure for substance in succession planning. They experience generosity as risk. They hold their own resources at a distance — managing them rather than inhabiting their stewardship of them. These are not character failures. They are the predictable consequences of operating a governance function disconnected from its own meaning.
