Burning Man Project

Burning Man is an annual event held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, gathering tens of thousands of participants around ten core principles including radical self-reliance, radical inclusion, decommodification, and civic responsibility. What began in 1986 as a small beach gathering in San Francisco has become one of the most studied social experiments in voluntary community organization. The temporary city of Black Rock City is built and dismantled each year, leaving no trace.

The Burning Man Project, the nonprofit organization behind the event, also supports a global network of regional events and year-round communities practicing the same principles across dozens of countries. Its Culturally embedded in Silicon Valley and the global creative class, Burning Man has shaped the organizational culture of several of the world's most significant technology companies and philanthropic initiatives.

From a systemic perspective, Burning Man functions as a living laboratory for post-scarcity social organization — a temporary demonstration that human communities can self-organize around gift economy principles at scale.
