Institute of Noetic Sciences — IONS

Scientifically mapping the territory that science forgot it had ignored.

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

The Institute of Noetic Sciences was founded in 1973 by astronaut Edgar Mitchell following his Apollo 14 mission, during which he experienced a profound shift in consciousness while returning from the moon. IONS is dedicated to the scientific study of subjective experience — consciousness, intuition, healing, and the nature of mind — through rigorous research that bridges the methodologies of natural science and the phenomenology of inner experience.

Based in Petaluma, California, IONS conducts original research, publishes peer-reviewed findings, and convenes a global community of scientists, practitioners, and explorers around questions that mainstream science has historically marginalized. Its research areas include extended human capacities, the interconnectedness of living systems, and the relationship between inner transformation and outer change.

IONS occupies a singular position in the global knowledge ecosystem — it applies scientific rigor to territory that most institutions either dismiss or address only through religious or therapeutic frameworks. As the evidence base for consciousness studies, contemplative practice, and mind-body medicine continues to grow, IONS functions as one of the primary bridges between experiential wisdom traditions and institutional scientific legitimacy. For a transition that will require not only technological innovation but a transformation in how humans understand themselves, the work of IONS points toward the missing variable.
