The legal and moral infrastructure for business as a force for good.
OFFICIAL WEBSITEB Lab is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 by Jay Coen Gilbert, Bart Houlahan, and Andrew Kassoy with the mission of transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet. B Lab administers the B Corp certification — a rigorous third-party standard that assesses companies' social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Certified B Corporations must meet high standards of verified performance, legal accountability, and public transparency, and commit to balancing profit with purpose.
The B Corp movement has grown to include thousands of certified companies across more than eighty countries and over one hundred and fifty industries, ranging from small enterprises to global brands. B Lab works with policymakers to develop new legal structures — including benefit corporation legislation — that embed stakeholder accountability into corporate law, not just corporate culture.
B Corp's contribution to the transition is the creation of a credible, third-party verified standard for business as a force for good — a market signal that makes it possible for capital, talent, and consumers to distinguish genuine commitment from greenwashing. For family enterprises navigating the integration of values and business strategy across generations, B Corp certification offers both a governance framework and a public accountability mechanism. More broadly, the B Corp movement represents the proposition that the legal and institutional architecture of the corporation itself — not just the intentions of its leaders — must change if business is to serve a genuinely regenerative function.
